ENRICHMENT: The Course for New English Teachers and Non-Subject Specialists

This is a 12-month course for English teachers who want to develop their subject knowledge and English-specific classroom practice. It is designed specifically for people who are new to teaching English, and people who are teaching English without a subject degree, but I hope it will also be useful for people who just want to focus on their craft and learn more about their subject – English is vast!

What sets this course apart from something like a ‘Subject Knowledge Enhancement’ course from a university or other awarding body?

Many SKEs are great, but they are often written and delivered by people who aren’t teachers, and they often only focus on subject knowledge without exploring the way in which that knowledge can be used in the classroom. This course has been designed by me (an experienced and currently practising English teacher, former Head of Department and GCSE and A Level examiner), and is based on the real world of the classroom. Every session you complete will give you ideas and resources to use in your classroom.

How is this course different from just getting a membership to your CPD library?

You will get CPD library content with this course, but you will also get seven sessions of core content which have been written specifically for you and which are not part of the CPD library. You will also get to attend live Q&A sessions with me spread over the course of the year.

When this course ends, you will also get an additional 12-month individual subscription to my CPD library (worth £84).

What is the structure of this course, and how will I access the material?

When you purchase this course, you will gain access to your own personal account area of the website. Here, you will see the course and all its contents. The course is split into three sections:

1. Knowledge: These are a bank of CPD materials from my CPD library which you can access at your own pace from the day you sign up. I will provide an overview and a suggested order in which to watch the videos, but this is entirely up to you.
2. Core Practice: Six CPD sessions on core areas of practice in the English classroom. These form the spine of your course and provide a comprehensive guide to pedagogy in English. These sessions cover: Reading and Writing; Talk and Questioning; Modelling; Knowledge; Feedback, Reflection and Metacognition; Assessment and Progress.
3. Community: Course members will be invited to a series of live Q&A sessions with me over the course of the year. Members can submit questions and ideas in advance, and I will answer all your queries and discuss key ideas which people want to explore. Sessions take place as Google Meets once per half term, and are relatively relaxed and entirely optional.
4. Subscription: at the end of this course, you get a complimentary 12-month Individual Membership of my CPD library (worth £84).

All content can be accessed in your own time and at your own pace.
