Author: Frances Hardinge

Form: Fantasy Novel

Length: 434 pages

Brief synopsis: A fantasy, adventure story with elements of magic, mythology and steampunk. The story focuses on Hark, his friendship with Jelt, and the impact the now dead gods had on the world.

Age recommendation and challenging content: Suitable for Years 7 and 8

Notable reasons for recommending this book: Links to mythology, allegories and the power of stories and beliefs. Great positive representation of the deaf community in the form of ‘sea-kissed’ characters.

Other useful information for teachers: Can be a challenging read for some pupils, but it is working very well with our Year 7s. They have given it a lot of praise!
