Author: Jane Elson

Form: Prose Fiction

Length: 320 pages

Brief synopsis: Asthmatic Bee is terrified of water, but when Chrystal double dares her to enter the sponsored swim, she can’t back down. New boy Moon Star can’t read and doesn’t like ‘book learning’ – he wants to be free. Bee and Moon Star make a pact and a new friendship is formed.

Age recommendation and challenging content: There is one part towards the end that involves a baby being close to death and there is some mild peril in the form of Bee having flashbacks to almost drowning. Would recommend for Y7.

Notable reasons for recommending this book: Deals sensitively with the issue of prejudice against the Traveller community. Also has themes of friendship and bullying. Protagonist is in Y6 so possibly useful for transition.
