Form: Prose Novel

Length: 320 pages

Brief Synopsis: YA novel written by Jewish author whose family has been impacted by the Holocaust. Three friends whose worlds are torn apart. Two of them Jewish and the other the son of a Nazi who joins the Hitler Youth. A refreshing, heartbreaking and accurate story about the Holocaust. Cross-curricular links to History.

Age Recommendation and Challenging Content: Recommended for y8 or 9. Loss is a key theme and naturally it’s really sad and emotive in parts but deals with these issues sensitively.

Notable reasons for recommending this book: Educational, accurate, supports what the students are learning about in History. Recommended by a Y9 student so it’s something that would appeal to them. Cultural value and context are both key. This is a much better alternative the The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas which contains inaccuracies.
