Form and genre: prose, historical fiction

Length: 352 pages

Summary: Lina is just 15 when she is hauled from her home by Soviet Guards and with her mother and younger brother, is sent away in a cattle cart to Siberia. She doesn’t know where she is going or whether she will ever see her Father again. This book is set in 1941 and is based on real first-hand family accounts and survivor memories.

Age recommendation and challenging content: Year 8 and 9. There are some upsetting descriptions.

Notable reasons for recommending this book: In my opinion, it is a much better depiction of what happened during World War 2 than books like Boy in the Striped Pyjamas etc.
