Form and genre: Historical fiction prose
Length: 264 pages
Summary:
Refugee tells the stories of three 12 year old refugees at different times- Josef escaping Nazi Germany, Isabel fleeing Castro’s Cuba, and Mahmoud’s journey from Syria to Germany in 2015.
Age recommendation and challenging content: Some upsetting scenes of violence, deaths. Recommended for Year 7/8.
Notable reasons for recommending this book: Three great characters and interconnected stories. It’s a great novel to tie into what students learn about in history and the news. Students respond thoughtfully and emphatically to the stories and I have done several extensions to connect to the challenges modern refugees face throughout their journeys.
