Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Recommended by Danielle Waldron (@_MissWaldron)

Form and genre: novel, ghost story

Length: 160 pages

Summary: Ghost story about 12-year old Jerome who is killed by a police officer and meets Emmet Till in the afterlife. Fast-paced and gripping. Emmet helps him come to terms with what happened to him.

Age recommendation and challenging content: Some imagery of death and police brutality. Would recommend for Y7 onwards.

Notable reasons for recommending this book: Really great text – eye opening and completely captivating. A call to action and very thought provoking for students, and teaches greatly about humanity.

Other helpful information: The protagonist is fictional, but the other ‘Ghost boys’ Jerome meets are real life boys who were murdered unjustly. It would be worth familiarising yourself with the Tamir Rice and Emmett Till stories.
